Big Ben - Big Jerk?

Even if Ben is innocent of both indecent assault charges, two things are becoming amazingly clear about Ben Roethlisberger. The first is that he can't take the summer off without getting himself in trouble, and the second is that he's pretty much a jerk."Amber Hanley, a 21-year-old college student who met NFL star Ben Roethlisberger in a Georgia bar, says the Steeelers quarterback wanted more than a just a cute photo with the young co-ed, but she just rolled her eyes and moved on, earning a tongue lashing from Big Ben."So a 21 year old girls asks him for a pic and he wants to get her naked? Ok, I get that, sure... but when she says no, why not just move on to the next group of 21 year old women in the bar that WILL let Ben in their end zone?"Recently he has been seen gambling in Las Vegas and, according to the Associated Press, some Pittsburgh restaurant owners complain the man with a $102 million contract skips out on the checks."Recently? Did it really take the AP 3 years to catch up to BarSmart on this? Sorry folks but Ben acting like a cheapskate and sneaking out of bars is not a new development. You figure that even if Ben Jerk thinks he should drink for free because of all the people who showed up to see him, he should at least tip the server right? Nope, he skips out on that too. Here is my favorite part of this story..."Early in his career, Roethlisberger was photographed wearing a "Drink Like a Champion" t-shirt and appeared to be following it's moniker."Yup, they are still pulling out the Ben Roethlisberger getting drunk at Halo Nightclub picture. I remember how hard everyone pushed to try and get those photos to disappear too. But do you remember why? Not because Ben was drunk with a fairly funny shirt on - but because the girl in the pic wasn't 21. I'm not sure if either of the assault charges are real, I do know it's not looking good for Ben, and I'm willing to lay down money that Real-Soon-Now Ben heads to some sort of rehab facility so he can appear before training camp starts and apologize for his bad drinking decisions.
Read more of this story at Barsmart

The Pittsburgh Pirates today announced the creation of Club Cambria, a new all-inclusive club on the private suite level of PNC Park. Club Cambria will be located just beyond the infield on the third base side of the ballpark and will provide a spectacular view for Pirates games, concerts, and other events, with tremendous sight lines of the field with the picturesque Downtown Pittsburgh skyline in the background. The Pirates partnered with Cambria, the only American maker of quartz countertops that has recently expanded in the Pittsburgh market, to open the new club in conjunction with the Pirates' home opener on April 5 at 1:35 p.m. against the Los Angeles Dodgers. The new club, which is the size of four PNC Park suites, features an open floor plan with a private full-service bar, nine flat-screen televisions, private restrooms and a private suite attendant. A full-season ticket package in the new Club includes a seat for all Pittsburgh Pirates home games, exclusive concierge service, nightly chef's stations, desserts, snacks and non-alcoholic beverages - all included in the price of membership."The creation of Club Cambria provides an additional outstanding option for fans who want a luxury experience for entertaining clients, customers and friends on the suite level at PNC Park but who prefer to entertain in smaller groups of two, four or six," said Pirates President Frank Coonelly. "Based on the success of our Lexus Club on the field-level of PNC Park, we realized there is demand for a similar Club on the suite level. Transforming four standard suites into one large club gives members the option to entertain clients, family and friends in an upscale setting with all of the amenities of a private club, all while enjoying Pirates baseball and a breathtaking view of the Pittsburgh skyline."The new Club will showcase Cambria natural quartz countertops, bar tops, tabletops, wall cladding and tile throughout the space. "We are thrilled to partner with the Pittsburgh Pirates to feature Cambria stone in an exceptional venue like PNC Park," said Peter Martin, Cambria's Executive Vice President of Sales and Marketing.Fans who purchase tickets for Club Cambria will be guaranteed the same seat within the Club for all Pirates home games. Members will also have the opportunity to purchase their seats for other PNC Park events, including concerts such as The Dave Matthews Band, which will perform on Saturday, July 10.Club Cambria will open one and one-half hours prior to game time and will remain open until one-half hour after the game concludes. The buffet begins upon the opening of the club and will continue throughout the entirety of the game. The space is also available to host private events, including weddings, private parties, meetings and more.
Read more of this story at Barsmart

PITTSBURGH – A Pittsburgh-area woman is suing Bank of America, claiming it wrongfully repossessed her home and saying that a bank contractor trashed the house and took her parrot.Forty-six-year-old Angela Iannelli sued Bank of America in Allegheny County on Monday. She claims her mortgage payments were on time when the contractor damaged furniture, took her pet parrot and padlocked the door to her Allison Park home in October.Bank of America declined to comment. The suit seeks unspecified damages.Iannelli's attorney says she suffered irreparable emotional damage and is afraid to set foot in the house. The lawsuit says she eventually regained possession of the bird, named Luke, after repeated phone calls to the bank.
Read more of this story at Barsmart

Just found this..."Zone case 58/10 on Thursday, March 11 at 9:50 a.m. is the appeal of 16th & Carson Street Partners LLC, appellant for 1601-1605 East Carson Street in the 17th Ward, for an appeal requesting a 55' x 60' roof-top deck (approximately 2300 sq. ft.) above existing two-story restaurant (Diesel)"Looks like they want to put a deck on top of Diesel... something I think we should all encourage. But who the heck is calling Diesel a restaurant? I don't even think they sell bags of chips do they?Anyway, if you are interested in supporting Diesel's deck show up at the John P. Robin Civic Building, 200 Ross Street on Thursday to say you think it is a good idea. I'm betting you get to meet Bruce Kraus!
Read more of this story at Barsmart

Troopers Raid Philly Bars.. or Keystone Kops & The PLCB

I wish I could say this surprises me..
but it doesn'tIT WAS ELIOT NESS and the Untouchables, as played by the Keystone Kops.More than a dozen armed State Police officers conducted simultaneous raids last week on three popular Philadelphia bars known for their wide beer selections. The cops confiscated hundreds of bottles of expensive ales and lagers, now in State Police custody at an undisclosed location. The alleged offense: Although the bar owners had bought the beer legally from licensed Pennsylvania distributors and had paid all the necessary taxes, the police claimed that nobody had registered the precise names of the beers with the state Liquor Control Board - a process that requires the brewers or their importers to pay a $75 registration fee for each product they want to sell in Pennsylvania.Based on a complaint from someone the State Police refuse to identify, three teams of officers converged last Thursday on the three bars, run by Leigh Maida and her husband, Brendan Hartranft. Checking their inventories against the state's official list of more than 2,800 brands, the cops seized four kegs and 317 bottles, totaling 60.9 gallons of beer, according to police calculations. In fact, according to Maida, more than half the beer removed by the State Police was properly registered - but the cops couldn't find it on their lists because of "clerical errors" or "blatant ineptitude" between the police and the Liquor Control Board, with whom the officers were conferring by telephone. She estimated the total value of the confiscated stock at $7,200, representing about 20 brands, some of which go by multiple names. For instance, the cops grabbed Monk's Cafe Sour Flemish Red Ale.The beer has been sold throughout the state at dozens of restaurants and distributors for the last seven years. The brand appears on the state's online list as "Monk's Cafe Ale." It's on tap seven days a week at the Center City bar after which it was named: Monk's Cafe, at 16th and Spruce streets.Read the rest...
Read more of this story at Barsmart

WELLINGTON, New Zealand – The rare spirits that went under the gavel at a recent online auction in New Zealand weren't aged brandies or hard-to-find liqueurs.Instead, two glass vials purportedly containing the ghosts of two dead people sold for $2,830 New Zealand dollars ($1,983) at an auction that ended Monday night. The "ghosts" were put up for bidding by Avie Woodbury from the southern city of Christchurch. She said they were captured in her house and stored in glass vials with stoppers and dipped in holy water, which she says "dulls the spirits' energy."She said they were the spirits of an old man who lived in the house during the 1920s, and a powerful, disruptive little girl who turned up after a session with a spirit-calling Ouija board. Since an exorcism at the property last July led to their capture, there has been no further spooky activity in the house, she said. The auction attracted more than 214,000 page views and dozens of questions before the winning bid, Trademe auction site spokesman Paul Ford said Tuesday. The name of the winning bidder was not released.Woodbury said that once an "exorcist's fee" has been deducted, the proceeds of the spirit sale will go to the animal welfare group the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.
Read more of this story at Barsmart

Our Old dues= 0 $ so 0 x 3 = 0$ Remember we are doing this for the hell of it!!!3. It is good to tip; it is not so good to assume you know the best place to put the bills.4. If you ignore the whistle and show up late to the next bar or without a nametag, you may not get the special and you may have to pay the cover to get in. You can get nametags at the first 3 bars. And our bar-crawl tradition is not to put your real name on the nametag.5. You are responsible for your behavior. If you get drunk, it is your own fault, not our fault and not the bar's. Take a cab home.(We reccommend Classy Cab, I like going home in a Limo).6. You are also responsible for the people you invite. If you know someone is a nasty or problem drunk, do not invite him..her. The pub-crawl is not the place for him/her to display his/her talents. If you cause a problem, you will be asked to leave and so will the person who invited you. We have a good reputation. You will not spoil it for the rest of us.7. Be nice to the bartenders and staff. When they remember us fondly, we get better specials.8. To be added to the e-mail list, go to the http://www.pubcrawl.us if you lose the nametag marker (Irish Rules), you forfeit your deposit (see Rule 2). Your 1st nametag is free and please put a nickname on your nametag just to make the crawl more fun!9. Respect the people with the whistles, trying to organize these crawls is like herding cats; so buy them a drink (a lil self promotion doesn't hurt).10. By participating in the crawl, you agree to all these rules (especially "no whining").We have done crawls locally: Strip District, Southside, Mt Washington & Station Square, Oakmont, Oakland, Bloomfield, Downtown Pittsburgh, Polish Hill and Lawrenceville. Also we occasionally crawl elsewhere: Dublin Ireland, Cleveland Flats, Prague, Germany, Toronto Canada & Seven Springs Resort and a bunch of other places.
Read more of this story at Barsmart

McLouth opens my eyes to some problems with Pirates

Braves outfielder Nate McLouth greeted his former Pirates teammates Thursday with a run scored in Atlanta's Grapefruit League win.

That's not so much news.

What really stood out were two comments from McLouth, as reported by the Post-Gazette.

The first, from Chuck Finder's story:
"Guess they do [an eye exam] in spring training, but a blind man could pass that test. So I'd never really done a full eye exam. Got home a couple of days after the season ended and ended up getting contacts. It was kind of interesting to find that out when I got home. ... The way I describe it, it's kind of like going from watching standard-definition television to watching HD. It just kind of sharpens things up a bit. It has been a big help. Absolutely. Both in seeing pitches and in the outfield."
Can the Pirates, who really need every advantage they possibly could get, really cut short eye exams? Did anyone in the organization see "Major League"?

Ricky "Wild Thing" Vaughn couldn't find the strike zone until manager Lou Brown made him get a pair of glasses.

The Pirates have million-dollar athletes on their roster and they don't know if their eyesight is the best it can be? If that's the case, the Pirates really are in trouble.

Even if the Bucs can evaluate talent, McLouth's comments make it appear that the team can't get the most out of that talent.

But I wonder about their talent evaluation, which brings me to McLouth's other comment, which was posted on Finder's dispatch on the PG's PBC blog:
"There are ... guys like Tommy Hanson and Jair Jurrjens and Jason Heyward, who are some of the best young players in the game. . . . It's amazing how many good prospects the Braves have in their system all the time. And when is the last time they had a top-10 pick? To get all these studs in their system, it's fun to see and great to play with these people." To be fair, the Braves got Jurrjens from the Tigers. But the point still is valid.

Year after year, the Pirates have high picks in the draft. What do they have to show for it? Not much.

Then there are teams like the Braves that pick after the Pirates and still manage to stockpile talent.

Maybe the Neal Huntington era will be different when it comes to the draft. It's not fair to blame him for others' failures in the draft.

The McLouth trade was his, and we'll know soon enough on how to rate it.

If you tell a lie often enough, it becomes the truth.

That adage might work in politics, but it certainly doesn't work when it comes to the Pittsburgh Pirates.

At least that's my feelings a week after Pirates president Frank Coonelly uttered the phrase that soon will not be forgotten. "Today is our future because 2010 is the beginning of the next dynasty of the Pirates for me."

I'm sure you heard it. And it's probably a safe bet that you're just as flabbergasted as I am this long after his proclamation.

2010 simply will be another year in a long line of losing seasons for the Pirates, no matter what Coonelly says.

Spring training is supposed to be a time of optimism. I don't have it this season when it comes to the Bucs.

Bob Nutting can boast about a great team. GM Neal Huntington can, too. Same goes for manager John Russell.

I can't trust or believe a word these guys say -- just like a politician.

Do they really think anyone that follows the Pirates -- or baseball -- believes this is the start of something special?

Why can't they just be honest with everyone? We've been though enough losing. We can take it.

This is, what, the second year of a fourth five-year plan? I've lost count.

Please don't tell me about this team being more talented than last year's. Don't try to sell me on the management trio of Connelly, Huntington and Russell being the best management team in baseball.

Just be honest.

All it takes is a quick look at the standings to know what the truth is. You can't get away with this stuff.

ID Scanning Can Hurt Customers Buying Beer at Giant Eagle

Pennsylvania is sometimes referred to as "East Utah" in regards to its legendarily restrictive alcohol laws. Where else in the United States were you forced to buy a minimum of 24 beers from a 'Beer Distributor' if you wanted to take a drink home? Until recently, one could buy no beer from grocery stores or gas stations--just bars (and bar prices) or a box of two dozen from the nearest opaque-windowed distributor. As Pennsylvania loosens up on its laws, some grocery stores are getting into the act. Giant Eagle and Wegmans now sell beer at a couple of Pennsylvania stores, albeit in restrictive "pseudo-bars" housed within the big box. Shop-N-Save is not far behind. They are glad to tell you that they aren't a grocery store, but a bar that is within a grocery store. This semantic dance upsets the beer distributors. One of the main arguments against sales of beer and wine in a grocery store is that stores are supposedly notoriously lenient and give out alcohol to anyone. The other argument against opening up sales is that selling beer at gas stations promotes drunk driving. To counter the myth of 'leniency,' Giant Eagle and Wegmans have a 100 percent compliance policy that states all customers must scan their ID for every beer purchase. This is not a PA law, but a store policy designed to show due-diligence. But it's a solution that opens up a nasty can of worms in regards to personal privacy.Follow the link to read the rest.
Read more of this story at Barsmart

This article is funnier if you read it with a ragtime piano playing in your head, or Benny Hill music. Police were called after a report of a burglary in progress on Edwards Lane around 10 p.m. Friday. The suspect was found under a nearby tree and had a gun to his head. The two responding officers backed away from the suspect and lost their footing on a snowy hillside. At that time, the suspect got up and made his way through a nearby yard, got into a patrol car that was left running and took off.Officers pursued the man on foot and one was nearly run over by the suspect. Both officers then fired rounds at the vehicle, but police don't believe the suspect was hit by any of the bullets.Shortly after being shot at, the suspect crashed into a snow bank, got out of the car and got away on foot into a wooded area near Tudor Lane and Interstate 79.Police were able to track him for a short distance, but heavy snowfall prevented them from catching the suspect. The suspect is described as being 5 feet 8 inches tall and was last seen wearing a black coat and black, orange and white backpack.
Read more of this story at Barsmart
