'Speed Racer' pulls into the winner's circle

"Blasphemy!" That was my original thought when I first saw the previews for "Speed Racer." It was in an e-surance commercial, and quite frankly, I was appalled. The bubblegum music, the crazy effects ... it just seemed like some bad rip-off of my childhood come to life. I had written this movie off into the "major suck" column, but then I had a glimmer of hope ... Matthew Fox as Racer X. For some reason, a brief segment that I had seen with him changed my mind, and I opted to see it.And I must say, I'm kinda happy I did.Like I said, I remember the cartoon from my childhood. I can recall episodes with such greats as The Monster Car and the Car Acrobatic Team (the sound effect still resides in my head somewhere). Not that it really deserves it, but I take my Speed Racer and other childhood shows kinda seriously. Modern-day adaptations often produce things like puggles ... they're either cute or just plain ugly. There doesn't seem to be a happy medium."Speed Racer" starts from the beginning, with Speed as a kid and dreaming of being a race car driver. His older brother Rex (who left home many years ago), still lives at home and is a successful driver and record holder at certain tracks. You get to see how Speed and Trixie met, what caused Rex racer to leave (home many years ago -- sorry, I can never get that narrator's voice out of my head), and how embedded the Racers are to the sport.Speed ends up in a race, and sets a spectacular display of driving. He is approached by the Royalton Corporation, who wants to hire him as a driver for their race team. During this whole exchange, Speed learns that racing is corrupt and linked to the financial decisions of corporations. By opting not to join in the charade, he finds himself being targeted by other racers. This is when he gets approached by Inspector Detector and Racer X, with a way to help clean up the racing world. And this is all done very well. I must admit, I was kinda taken aback by how well thought out this plot was, and how they told the backstory without being bogged down with it. It was, dare I say, clever. Innovative. There was a lot of ground to cover, and they did so without it dragging too much. The cast is pretty impressive. The guy playing Speed ... well, I wasn't terribly impressed with him, but Matthew Fox as Racer X was about as close to perfect as you can get. John Goodman also did a great job as Pops (though he didn't seem to have any crazy outbursts), and Christina Ricci did a good job as Trixie. Spritle and Chim Chim are also there, but they are pretty much the only thing that the kids in the audience relate to ... most of the story was flying over their heads. I could tell because the noise level went up appreciably while they were talking story points, and dropped off immediately when Spritle and Chim Chim were up to their antics. If you're an effects person, this is a visual feast. Lots of crazy stuff going on. Too much to even try and describe, but a trip to IMAX wouldn't be out of the question. The effects come pretty close to how things worked in the cartoon -- lots of spins, jumps, cars blowing up and other assorted craziness. The entire movie is done in very vibrant colors to give the whole cartoon/comic book look and feel, and it can be really stunning and flashy at points. I'm sure in HD, the effects alone would be worth the cost of the DVD.My big criticism of this flick is that it is LONG. Almost 2.5 hours long. And it has a good end point after one of the big races, but they continue on past that to rush an ending. Really, it should have been made into 2 1.5 hour movies. It would have been much easier to deal with that way.Secondly, I HATED that they didn't actually race the Mach 5 on the normal race courses. He races it in a "backwater" race (which is really the main race of the flick, and the closest you come to the cartoon's races), but otherwise, there's a different Formula One style car that he drives. That was disappointing.Lastly, every time Royalton speaks, he sounds like the Emperor from the Star Wars saga to me. (Oh, and speaking of Star Wars, there was a preview for an animated Star Wars flick coming out -- I guess the time between "Attack of the Clones" and "Revenge of the Sith." Seemed interesting, and yet painful.)But other than that, it's a fun, quirky little film. It's not perfect by any stretch of the imagination, but most Speed Racer fans won't be ready to set the theater on fire after watching it, either. Purists won't be happy with it, but purists are never happy with anything. So, if you're intent on seeing this, my only recommendation would be to go to a late show, where there will be less children in the crowd. It's not really a kids' film, even though it has that look. This is more of a flick for parents trying to share a part of their childhood with their kids. Expect some changes to make things more interesting for them, but nothing too drastic.4 Mach 5s out of 5
Read more of this story at Barsmart

I know everyone gets a little superstitious about the playoffs and some of the things people do are pretty bizarre. In the past 10 years I've tried a lot of strange things to support the team such as growing a playoff beard or wearing the same shirt for every game. This year I'm trying something new. I haven't cleaned out my Pens coffee mug at work since the playoffs began. There is a pretty intense coffee stain in the mug right now, kind of looks like the coffee mugs at Denny's.
Read more of this story at Barsmart

Philly's 'Rocky' Statue A Pens Fan?PHILADELPHIA -- Although it appears as if the "Rocky" statue in Philadelphia might be a Pittsburgh Penguins, fan, it turns out Pens fans in Philly were just having a little fun. There was a recent posting on the Web site Craigslist looking for someone to dress the famous "Rocky" statue in a Pens jersey sometime before Friday night's Stanley Cup playoff game against the Flyers. The ad got so much attention that a Philly radio station solicited people to guard the statue throughout the day, but that wasn't enough, because on Wednesday morning, a Sidney Crosby jersey was found on the ground near the statue.A retaliation posting is asking Flyers fans in Pittsburgh to pull a similar prank, putting a jersey on a Pittsburgh landmark, possibly the "Panther statue on Pitt campus."On Friday, the red-hot Pens will battle it out with the sixth-seeded, in-state rival Flyers at Mellon Arena, where officials are calling for another "whiteout" effect during the game. All fans will get a free white T-shirt when they show up for Game 1 of the series. Also, a pre-game playoff rally for Pens fans was held downtown in Market Square at noon on Friday.Game 2 of the series is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Sunday at Mellon Arena. The series will then shift to Philadelphia for Games 3 and 4 on May 13 and May 15.
Read more of this story at Barsmart

"On a recent Friday evening at the Key West bar Hog's Breath Saloon, Mike Murphy was enjoying a Miller Lite and potato skins in the company of his wife and friends. Although not on reality television, his evening was broadcast online from the Florida bar's live Webcam, which showed the group occasionally waving to their grandkids at home in Indianapolis."So webcams aren't popular in Pittsburgh according to their list. Only Boston, Denver, Chicago, San Diego, Minneapolis, and even tourist spots like Key West. But HEY, BarSmart is all over Key West, FL.Story clickey...
Read more of this story at Barsmart

Downey Jr. rocks 'Iron Man'

Comic book movies always leave me leery. On one hand, I (almost) always want to go see them. On the other, most are just horrid, with few exceptions. So when I plunk my money down for the ticket, I assume it will be a love or hate affair. There just is no middle ground.Luckily, "Iron Man" found its way into the "love" column. And Robert Downey Jr.'s portrayal as Tony Stark is the main reason why.Instead of getting into any details of the movie (because I don't want to spoil it), here's some of the things I loved about it:1) The effects are great. They aren't crazily overboard or so full of motion (like the Hulk in the new "Hulk" movie previews) that you get distracted. Iron Man looks like part of the scenery, not a computer-generated image that was put into a scene.2) Downey Jr. nails Tony Stark's character. He's a playboy industrialist with everything money can buy, but an empty life. Eventually, he transitions to feeling like there are more important things out there, and opts to do something about it. And it's done in a believable fashion.3) The sarcasm written into the script is just great, as is the supporting cast. It may be a simple story, but it doesn't really feel that way.4) The fact that Stark doesn't immediately get it right. He experiments a lot with the suit, and has successes and failures. The failures add humor to the story (for those who don't get the dry wit), and shows that yeah, he's not perfect. And I just hate when there's no learning curve on a complicated device, like Iron Man's suit.Or put a different way, if you liked the first Spider-Man or any of the X-Men movies, chances are you'll enjoy "Iron Man." While I can't seem to figure out why, it doesn't seem as good as the X-Men series. It could be because the winning formula for those movies is basically duplicated in this one, so it kind of has a "been there, done that" kinda feel to it. However, I wouldn't let that deter you from going to check it out.My only other bit of advice: You may want to wait a week or so for the crowds to die down. This one brought out all the lunkheads who see two or three movies a year, and feel it's OK to talk on their cell phones or text during the flick. (And yeah, as the guy sitting in the back, when you start texting, I notice your screen light up in the dark theater...)5 out of 5PS: Oh yeah, stay until the end of the credits.
Read more of this story at Barsmart

And Sootiest City Title Goes To...Non-California City Named At Top Of List For First TimeLOS ANGELES -- A city outside California has for the first time been named the sootiest in the nation, one of the categories the American Lung Association uses to determine the most polluted cities in the country.Los Angeles still took the all-around pollution title, though.Pittsburgh overtook Los Angeles in the category that measures short-term particle pollution or soot. Los Angeles, the country's longtime soot and smog leader, has enacted aggressive measures to tackle sources of pollution, resulting in a substantial drop in particle pollution levels, said Janice Nolen, the association's assistant vice president of national policy and advocacy."It's not that Pittsburgh has gotten worse; it's that Los Angeles has gotten better," Nolen said. "If the trend continues, Pittsburgh will top two lists, and LA will only be leading the nation in ozone."Still, Los Angeles held its own in two other categories measuring year-round soot levels and smog. And statewide, 26 of California's 52 counties with air quality monitoring stations got failing grades for having either high ozone days or particle pollution days. The association's "State of the Air: 2008" report, being released Thursday, was based on air quality measurements reported to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency by state and local agencies between 2004 and 2006. The study looks at three key pollution measures. The eight metropolitan areas considered to be the nation's most polluted by every measure were Los Angeles, Bakersfield, Fresno, Visalia-Porterfield and Hanford-Corcoran, all in California; Washington-Baltimore; St. Louis; and Birmingham, Ala.The cleanest cities were Fargo, N.D., and Salinas, Calif. The rankings were based on ozone pollution levels produced when heat and sunlight come into contact with pollutants from power plants, cars, refineries and other sources. The lung association also studied particle pollution levels emitted from these sources, which are made up of a mix of tiny solid and liquid particles in the air.The study found that about 42 percent of residents nationwide live in counties with high levels of particle or ozone pollution."When you think of the impact of ozone on our respiratory tracts, imagine putting acid right in your eye. It's that corrosive," said Tony Gerber, a pulmonary specialist and assistant professor at the University of California, San Francisco. "This corrosiveness causes severe irritation and leads to problems like asthma attacks, coughing, wheezing, chest pain and even death."
Read more of this story at Barsmart
