I have tried this place a few times. And I'm still not sure. I loved the place years ago when it was the first Brothers Grimm. It is nice by the montour trail. It is away from the crowds. It just has an odd feel. Food isn't anything great. Beer prices are a little high. The 50's diner feel just isn't right. There are too many other good places to go.

I wish I knew what I want to write about this place. It's a bar that has the best of what I want and some of the worst of what I don't want at the same time. In full disclosure, this is one of, if not the closest bar to where I live, and as such, have been there countless times. So, unlike my other reviews which are based on one or two visits to a bat, this will contain my observations of many visits. I would also like to say that not any one visit or experience is the basis of me writing this review now. I've just been thinking about the joys of a great neighborhood bar, and how I wish I had one.

The layout of this bar may be the best I've ever been at. The bar is housed in a building that looks like a extra-long ranch house. The bar is long and spacious with pleanty of room for two bars, a dining area, seated counter against the glass opposite the main bar and second bar which is opened up on the busier Friday and Saturday nights. I've never felt cramped at this place and usually never have to worry about saving seats for my friends because even on a busy night, there is plenty of room no matter when they arrive. Above the bar is three HD televisions which can be seen the entire main bar area, there are also another two or three sets scattered around the rest of the bar area.

The bar is always very clean. I've never seen a dirty bathroom or dusty areas. The room doesn't have a funky smell and the floor is always free of sticky spots. For the size of the area, its very pleasant to see that they keep up with the upkeep.

Servers are always friendly. I can honestly say that I've neve been treated poorly at this bar. However, other mentions of staff and service will be found in the Con section as well.

The audio quality for the jukebox is very nice. They can crank it up when needed or have it play as nice background music, and it always sounds good. Musical selection of some of the patrons, not withstanding.

The prices seem a bit high for being a neighborhood bar. If there isn't a special or happy hour, I believe a normal pint of domestic beer is running $4.25, thought that may not be exactly right. I do know that my bill is always bigger than what I'm expecting, and that's with me going there a number of times.

The food is below average. I've never been impressed with anything I've ordered and if it isn't coming out of a deep fryer then it usually is very disappointing. The wings are scrappy and the sauces are pedestrian. Wait until you've had a few beverages in you before ordering and then you may not mind as much. Again, the price seems too high, especially when factoring in the quality.

There is a constant turnover of staff. It seems no one lasts more than eight months before they are never seen from again. I have no idea what percent quit compared to getting fired, so I can't speak to the reasons for the frequent turnover. It just makes me a little sad that my buddies have their local bar that has had the same friendly faces waiting for them there forever, then about the time a bartender or server begins to remember me here, they disappear.

I've written this full review without yet placing a number next to it, because it seems to me that on some days it can be a '9' and on other days be a '4'. I believe the most telling sign is that this bar is close to where I live and very rarely do I take friends there. To be very honest, if I wrote this two years ago, it probably would be a higher score, but this place has been on a slow but steady decline down since then. I wish I knew why.

Don't you want to go where everybody knows your name?
Well look no further because such a place does exist and I found it: the Brothers Grimm.
It may not be South Side or Station Square but this place offers what those places don't. For starters, you don't have to wait until the weekend to enjoy the Grimm. And you won't have to endure a snail-paced line just to get in the front door. Stop by more than once and the bartenders are bound to remember you (not many other Pittsburgh bars that I've been to can claim that).
They don't have VIP or sell booze by the bottle but this neighborhood hangout has two separate bars to please even the pickiest of bar patrons (I speak from experience), not to mention the Grimm's dining room and kitchen that's open all night.
If I'm in the mood to shoot some pool, play some darts or want to watch whichever Steel City sports team that happens to be dominating that night I'll hang at the "back bar," where it's "chill" enough to enjoy the game with the rest of Black & Gold Nation. But if I feel like really tying one on while finding some company of the opposite sex I'll hit up the "big bar" that has its counters packed with enough liquor to quench Charlie Sheen's thirst.
No matter the day of the week or the amount of alcohol I intend to consume, there's nowhere else I'd rather go than the Brothers Grimm when I want to knock a few back.

This is a great bar, it is truly non smoking, very open and large, pool tables, video games, outdoor deck and very good food. Definately a nice place to go to relax, and did I mention, they truly are non smoking?

Great place to have some beverages and eats.
Typical bar food for the most part but nice atmosphere. Big place w/ 2 bars.

Good prices!

OK, I haven't reviewed in a while, and I have a couple places on my mind. I've been to the Brothers Grimm twice since it reopened, certainly not enough times to be too critical or give too much praise, but the place is very clean and inviting. Both times were Friday for happy hour, and it was a nice diverse mix of people with a wide range of ages. The drinks were reasonably priced and the food we had both times were excellent. Once, my wife ordered a Captain and cranberry, but the waitress brought a Captain and Coke instead. We knew the waitress was new so we didn't say anything, it was a simple mistake. The waitress realized her own mistake and she apologized and brought us the correct drink and didn't charge us for either one. That shows me management cares about their customers, even if they aren't a regular. I'd recommend this place and go back again.
