Newly renovated, this place looks nothing like its former self. The Old: dirty, dark, etc.. beer was cheap, outdoor deck.

The New: Very nice interior. Everything in the place is clean and new. It is small inside, but the outside deck remains and people can go out there and chill as well. On opening night they had a band there which I enjoyed b/c it was sort of a bluesy sound and I happen to love that kinda music while sippin on the brew. They have an upstairs which at this point is not open. It is still being renovated and supposedly they will be having their live music up there when it is completed. That will be nice b/c the downstairs is so small. The beer is no longer as cheap as it was. I can't remember how much it is to be honest. It is nothing over exorbitant. The atmosphere unlike any other Oakland bar that I can think of mostly because of the decor and slightly higher beer prices. Less people who are just going out to get trashed for cheap will come here. If this place starts to have some quality live music fairly frequently I will definitely start going there more often. I liked what I saw so far. It has potential.

This bar was closed for months and months while it was being renovated. I was in Oakland last night and saw that it had finally re-opened, so I stopped in. The renovations are great-- nice hardwood floors, red walls, great artwork, flatscreen tvs, new bar, extra-clean bathrooms... Only problem is, once Pitt is back in regular session, I just don't know how long this will last. It wasn't too crowded on a Saturday night, but again, school isn't in regular session. It is pretty small inside, definitely can't hold as many people as say, Hemingway's. The deck is definitely a nice aspect that can be enjoyed during the summer. The waitstaff was dressed in cheesy schoolgirl skirts. It almost felt like they were trying to bring a loungey type bar to Oakland. On one hand- a nice change. On the other hand- most college kids want a college bar they can walk to and get hammered on $1 drafts. The new Pittsburgh Cafe probably won't fulfill this. If kids want a loungey type place, I think they'll be more likely to travel down to the Southside or Strip. I don't know what their mixed drink prices are, but a Miller bottle was $2.50. They did have a nice beer selection, which you can check out on their website (they have Magic Hat, but for some reason it's not listed). All in all, a nice renovation, the place looks great... I just don't know how long it can last that way in Oakland.
