I go to the Rusty Barrel all the time and last night I was flabbergasted at what I saw from a new bar tender. I personally watched and heard this bartender (no sure of her name) be extremely rude to a, what seemed to be sober customer just trying to get a drink. She walked up to him and he greeted her kindly, she snapped at him and said "what do you want to drink I don't have time to chit chat". This customer was so taking it back and so was I. She then walked away from him and didn't come back so the customer left. I just couldn't believe in all the months I have been coming to this place that this New bartender was so rude. I have always had great service experiences at the rusty barrel until last night. Although she was not rude to me, it opened my eyes to the kind of people they hire to work there. Overall, after this experience I will probably rethink going there again.

Rusty Barrel is a Bar located on the off streets in southside, so it is perfect if you want to enjoy the Southside atmosphere without the large Southside crowd. The bar offers daily specials, a lot of which is 2$ you call its. Also the bar offers a pool table and dart board so it is great for a small group to go and just hang out. The bartenders are very attentive and polite, and they have a decent selection of bottled beers.

I found the rusty barrel to be a great bar, it has the dive bar aesthetic but everything is clean and new, they have a room with pool and darts which adds to the atmosphere, there was good music as well as a customer run music player, all the drinks were $2 which didn't hurt either! I showed up with a crowd of about 40, the bartender told us it was her first day, we are a bunch of mid twenty year olds so we were drinking fast and she kept up with us and we received great service! I had a blast there and I will definitely be back. It felt like a good ole Pittsburgh bar instead of these new clubs and bars that are lacking this small Pennsylvania city's charm!

Obviously a first time bar owner. The bartenders asked me 3 times what I ordered and looked like they had no idea. Drinks took 7 minutes.
Atmosphere was ghetto.
If u want sweat suit, too tight clothing, terrible music, and horrible bar service, then this is for u. Have fun and good luck getting a drink and an above age girl

My friends and I went on our 2nd annual "Dive Bar Crawl" 2 weeks ago. We did one last summer right before school started and again this summer. Both years we ended at St. James Place and everyone loved it. It isn't a bar that I would go to every week, but its a nice change of pace. The back room full of pool tables and other games is a lot of fun with a good group of friends!

My friends from work and I had a great time here last week. I was suprised by the crowd on a Tuesday night. Not bad at all! The Karaoke DJ was great, the beer was cold and the staff was friendly. The only thing I wish was different about this bar is the structure of the building. The bar is in a smaller area but there is a big room through through a doorway. It goes unnoticed when you initially walk into the establishment. It is is a great location, just a few blocks from Carson Street, and parking was no problem!

St. James Place has a great atmosphere because of the people that go there, the bartenders/staff, and the bands that often play there. SJP has a great selection of liquor plus import and domestic beers for CHEAP! I personally love this place and have fun each and every time I'm there.

The St. James Place is a bar I've wanted to get to for a while now. Located two or three blocks off of the bustle of East Carson, the St. James is a bar you want to find yourself at if you're in the south side but want to avoid the Friday night "Jersey Shore" watching crowd.

The bar is essentially broken up into two rooms, one that houses the bar and another room that holds the pool table, dart board and some open space that doubles as a stage if a band is performing.

While not jammed, the place certainly wasn't slow; yet I never had to wait for a drink, even with only one bartender (that I noticed, at least) on duty. If she was in the middle of a conversation with another patron (most certainly one of the many apparent regulars there) she'd finish her thought and come over and grab what I needed. This in contrast the places where the bartender will have a five minute conversation with someone whilst oblivious to the small mass of people waiting for another round with ever diminishing tips in hand.

The bar had a small selection of drafts, none of which were local or regional brews. From my best recollection, they were all something lites and Blue Moon. However, in their coolers, they had a better selection of bottles. There was nothing exotic, but definitely enough there to ensure everyone could find something they enjoy. For comparison, the bottles of Woodchuck I had were $3.75. I noticed they also had a small food menu containing the staple of tavern foods; however, I wasn't there to eat, and couldn't tell you about the quality or flavor.

In all, I found the place to be fairly clean and well maintained. They had a guy or two walking around to grab the empty bottles that were left abandoned on tables or rails. The air was void of any funky smells, and walls and floors seemed to be regularly washed.

A big plus goes to jukebox volume. This place didn't have the speakers cranked up to 11. It isn't a nightclub and the volume reflected that. I could rock out to a song if need be, while still having a conversation with the person next to me.

The main letdown was the bathroom. Mainly, the toilet was broken, and from the look of the garbage bag covering it, had been for some time. If my needs were more than a urinal could handle, I'm not sure what I'd end up doing. Simply put, having a bar and not having a working toilet for half the patrons, even for one night, is not acceptable.

While a broken toilet will lower my rating, it won;t stop me from taking a return trip to the St. James Place. No toilet next time though, and who knows...

There is a lot of character at this little corner bar. I went on an off night and was happy to see a good karaoke crowd! I also love that there were pool tables. I had a ton of fun drinking and hanging out. Great place to go to hang out and relax with friends! The only bad thing I'll say about this bar is the bathroom was awkward and small.

Still excellent wings here. Good variety of beers and there is usually a good special going. Bathrooms are not the cleanest. Excellent service makes up for it.

I enjoyed a recent trip to St. James Place tavern this weekend. I stayed for several hours and really got to enjoy what the bar had to offer. My friends and I tried several different menu items and enjoyed them all. My favorite was the spicy wings.

The service from the bartenders and bar managers was great. They were polite and joined in conversation. The trip was an overall great experience and I will certainly be going again.

I frequent St James on karaoke night, which is Tuesdays. Depending on the weather and the time of year it can draw a pretty decent size crowd, but, no matter the size of the crowd, we always have a great time.
The staff is always welcoming and friendly. On a number of occasions when I was there alone at the end of the evening one of them would even walk me to my car to make sure I was safe, not something I've found anywhere else.
The food and drinks are fairly priced, pretty tasty and served quickly.
You can usually find one of two pool tables open and if not there's always darts or bowling.
My only advice/complaint would be to come early on karaoke night if you want to find a seat in the back where the dj is set up because there is very limited seating there. Otherwise, I love St James and have brought/invited many friends and family members to come down for karoke, trivia night, Halloween, and just to have a drink. It kind of reminds me of our own local "Cheers".

First, to get the biggest negative out of the way. The parking is not very good, however, you can say the same about most places on the South Side, especially on the back streets. That is the only thing keeping this from being a full on 9 rating.

Service- Very fast, courteous service. Although I was lucky enough to have a few drinks bought for me, and didn't spend all that much time at the bar, neither did anyone waiting for a drink. In my opinion, service is the #1 thing for me, the best bars can be ruined by poor service. full 9 here, in fact, this one deserves a 10

Prices- I can't give an honest rating here, however the $2.50 Straub special was more than fair, and growing up on Straub beer, nostalgic for me.

Bathrooms- Since I didnt' get the Roethlisberger treatment last night, I can't comment on the women't bathroom. The Men's however, with the blackboard covered walls was a nice touch. A little cramped getting from toilet to toilet, and only had 1 urinal, and 1 toilet, which was not a problem with the size of crowd last night, as there was no line, I could see this being a bottleneck on a busier night

Overall appearance- Very clean, and more than enough room, with booths in the front for relaxing, and the ample back room, it is a nice sized establishment.

DJ/Entertainment - since it was karaoke night, the patrons were the entertainment, and entertaining that was, with the mixed crowd of the evening. The DJ IMHO was the typical karaoke DJ, not the best, but not the worst either.

Summary-- Overall, i liked this place, and would actually enjoy making it down there again some time. The crowd was a mixed crowd of all ages, and backgrounds, the prices were fair, and it was a good experience.

We went to St. James for their St.Patrick eve party and i must say the staff was awesome as were the barsmart girls and the miller lite girls as well. we arrived about an hour early for the party and was greeted by a friendly bartender this place has a real Irish pub/local hometown feel the beer special was miller lite for $2.00 but the regular special is straub for the same price. We had a blast with the people there some of which i knew for a long time some i just met that night none the less we had a stream of people in and out of our booth all night we had good conversation and laughs with all. Hammer, Paul, the rest of the staff and the barsmart girls really made the party for us. i will recommend St.James to anyone i talk to especially during a barsmart event. Seriously if you drink on the southside you really need to stop here

Great service. The bartenders are always quick and friendly and great to strike up a convo with. Good selection of beer and have a daily mystery beer which is pretty cool. The back room is huge with 2 pool tables and couches to chill on. I even recommend the food.

I love this bar, I haven't been there is awhile because sometimes gets overly crowded but when you see a bar like that, you know its a great bar to be in. I love this bar for Karaoke. I am sure I met the barsmart girls before or seen them. I am picky with my hamburgers but i love them! You cant beat the appetizers at half off on Fridays!!

St. James is one of the best bars in the southside. It's a great atmosphere to enjoy a cold drink and talk with your friends or shoot some pool and sing a little karaoke. The drinks are reasonably priced and the bartenders are fantastic. It's very clean and comfortable. I highly recomend you check it out!

When I first moved to Pittsburgh I found out about Karaoke night at St. James Place Tavern. I love karaoke! so, I thought Id give it a whirl. When I got there I asked the sweet bartendar about the barsmart people, and he pointed them out. They were all so friendly! I felt welcomed right away. I met so many people that night, and I go back almost every week because the bar is soooo perfect and the barsmart people are smart, funny, and really cool. and i LOVE the barsmart girls. They are soooo sweet! Thanks for the info on this place. I always look forward to Tuesday nights at St. James!

I absolutely love this place. There is plenty of room for you to actually enjoy yourself and the music is not too loud so you might be able to hold a conversation. There is plenty to do (pool tables, bowling game, karaoke on Tuesdays, etc.), and the food is pretty good. They run all kinds of drink specials, and the service is always good. My favorite thing is probably that it is a neighborhood bar where everyone is welcome. I can end up there after a night of 'clubbing' or stop by in a sweatshirt and hat and still have a great time.

Yesterday was the first time I have ever stepped into this bar. Initially I was unimpressed by the aesthetics of the place but really how many bars on the S.S. like this do you go to for its for its looks? In front there is the initial bar (service was very quick that night and the bartenders were polite and professional). In the back room there were 2 pool tables (score!). Also there was karaoke that night which I happen to enjoy. I liked the fact that they had couches sitting in a few places in the back room to provide some comfortable seating. I had some wings while I was there as well. They weren't the best wings in the world, but they were good and I would order them again. Overall I would say the bar was pretty decent and most of the people there seemed very easy to talk to. I'll probably go back.

No matter which bar i go to in the South Side, the night always ends at James. The peeple there aren't plastic, and the layout isn't the typical hallway with a bar. There's actually room to breath. There's also more than enough to keep you entertained if you're not just there to drink.

Everybody has his or her own "type" of place. For me St James Place is it. It's a neighborhood bar that has a little of everything. You can grab a beer up at the front bar or head in the back to play pool. There are a couple of televisions to catch a game during the week as well as daily drink specials. The kitchen is open pretty late so it's a good spot to grab some food too. A clean bar with a friendly staff that gets a good crowd. It's the kind of place that I can go just to get a beer and relax. I would definitely suggest stopping by to check it out.

Nice place. Great service. Terrific entertainment every Tuesday. The "Jam Night" with David Gamble and Brian Boone is a great place for musicians to get together and show off their abilities. There have been some really great ones over the past few weeks. I'd like to see some of the pics put up, since there have been over 300 taken, but, I'm sure that will come. The bar itsself is nice, friendly, clean, and inexpensive.
