I teetered between a 6 and a 7 and went with the 6 for the fact that it was so freaking hot in there and they never got it under control.
I finally get a chance to get out of my bar and decide to try and promote our Thursday night luck of the draw tournaments that we recently started and decide the one at the Brookline Pub on a night my main bartender was working would be a great time to do so. None of this pertains to my review but fuck it read on or stop. I don't care.
We get their at 7:10p. Registration for the tourney is between 7 and 8, and I had called and asked about the food. I was told they serve food such as hamburgers, subs, and basic bar foods and bartender assured me that it was good even after I said i'm kinda picky. Here is my first gripe. It took me about 10 minutes to get my order in. The bartender was doing her best and quite calm and collective otherwise who knows how long it woulda took. I give her an 'A' for bartending but the place a 'D' for the lack of either a waitress for her or another bartender to help her. The tournament was a decent sized one, and they knew it was going to be and there was one bartender who was also the server.
(Oh. I noticed some legal infractions but thats not going to be included in my review b/c thats not my business and they were not ones that normal people would mention.)
Ok. The food. I found the menu to be exactly as the bartender told me. The bar had lots of people eating which is always encouraging to me to go ahead and eat. I ordered the cheesesteak which is normally $4.25 but only $3.25 on Saturdays. I wasn't sure what to expect for such a low price so I got an order of fries that were $3 and were not to my liking but oh well i'm particular and i have had much worse so they are not a factor in my rating. The steak sandwich was about 6 inches and plenty of meat, onion, peppers, and cheese. It was well worth it and something if i ever get to the place again would reorder. Thus, the bartender was right in our telephone call and after eating I was happy and ready to go.
Next is my main grip = 2 rating points off for the temperature in the place and the lack of a solution. It got freaking hot and quite quickly. The tournament had 32 players. They knew not only that it was a saturday night but that they were getting all these random dart throwers in and had not done a thing in preparation. Put your a/c down to like 68 around 4 or 5. Have some industrial fans ready to go. All sorts of things were possible to do, but they had none done.
The crowd was diverse and hard to pin point except that it was one that I'd be quite content to have in my own bar. It was older but not a depends wearing crowd. It was diverse but no assholes that i could see. It had some girls and just as in my neighborhood bar they were there for a few starter drinks before heading to most likely southside.
I found no cleanliness problems. Everything seemed fine to me. The men's room didn't smell and had the normal spillage in front of the urinal nothing absurd.
Did I mention my drinks or the service after the darts got settled and most people ate? Around the time i ordered my food another woman got behind the bar to help out. Again once every1 got settled it didn't seem too bad of service. They had 2 bartenders by 10 who were slightly older ladies which might go with the crowd being a bit older (mid 30ish to mid 40ish, 50 is my guess on average age) however my drinks were priced about the same and made about the same in strength. I only ordered singles since it was kinda early for me and didn't expect strong drinks. I gave a $5 all four times I ordered. I think the one lady was charging me $3.25 for a captain and coke and the other was charging $3.50. Either way, I was just giving a $5 so it didn't matter to me.
Another thing that I liked again from the 1st bartender= She had a check open from my food as well as the 1st drink i ordered was off her. She looked at me when she was ending her shift and didn't say much in a way to make sure she got something but simply asked 'are you going to keep your tab running'. It was a very nice way to say 'my shift is over and i am leaving. tip me if you like'. Thus, I said 'oh no'. I will close it up which i did and took care of her accordingly.
If I ever get around that way, I will comfortable stopping in the Brookline Pub and feel fine grabbing a bite if I am hungry. I just hope they are a little better prepared when they are having events such as a 32 person dart tournament.
