I've recently gone to the Smiling Moose a couple of times for lunch and their new Chef and menu are a great combo for the place. They have really cleaned up the place. While you still get that punk feel you can relax with great food and good drink prices. =)
The menu seems reasonably priced and its healthy eating (for the most part). I suggest you try it out I was pleasantly surprised with the changes. My favorite is the Polenta Fritters!

This place was pretty cool. The inside is clean and there is a huge projection screen in back which they play sports on and sometimes movies. Drinks were priced reasonably. The food really stood out to me. The menu is not your typical bar food, it's definitely unique and some of the best food that I have tasted in awhile. I would def. check it out - service is good too.

OK... I don't usually review bars, but i had to write one on the Moose because i've never seen a bar change so much since the last time i was there! first off, i love what they did with the upstairs!! much much better than the old set up downstairs. but the downstairs?? wow! the punk/metal/rock dive i used to frequent has turned into an upscale restaurant or something?? i never saw this one coming!! they got all new furniture, rid the place of all the funny graffiti, installed a smoke eater, painted, and i guess just cleaned the hell out of the entire place...not that it was that bad before...oh, and they got this massive projection on the stage downstairs.. it was all quite shocking to take in at once.. scoobie (the bartender) is still there(thank god) as are most of the staff that i remember, and they got this chef from cafe du jour i think. Scoobie bought me a beer(there seems to be more micros b.t.w.) and talked me into ordering this crazy chicken sandwich which ended up being one of the best sandwiches i have ever eaten! very surprising, and the rest of their menu is almost intimidating to your average rock kid. they mostly have specialty sliders, sandwiches, and salads on the menu. cool idea.. the only thing that was kind of a drag was they took out their jukebox and put in one of those internet ones.. oh well, the place still has a great vibe, even though there were more college kids and people that looked like my parents hanging around eating dinner.. lol - go moose! love the food and the changes! (minus the new jukie and plants in the front windows) definitely worth a check out if you haven't been there in a while...

I don't frequent the Moose as much as I used to when I lived downtown but for anyone who enjoys metal, grunge, punk and rockabilly this place is the nucleus of all things rock! If you're not a huge fan of those genres don't fret because the atmosphere is always inviting. Some may find this place intimidating by how raw it is but beneath all the ink, denim and leather you'll find a straight-forward, NO Bull**** bar. They have a balanced selection of beer; don't expect many imports. A perk is when they're hosting a show (which is almost every night) you'll have the option to proceed upstairs without paying the cover fee. Upstairs holds a second bar, billiards and some coin-op machines; a nice getaway if you're passing through from other bars and need more elbow room. Fellow horror buffs will fall in love with the amount of memorabilia scattered throughout AND you may find a rare flick on one of the screens (ex. Basket Case II). Never have I gone unnoticed amongst a sea of people looking for a beer or shot. If you look thirsty they'll see ya. In fact the staff seems to specialize in that technique since so many gigs are held there. If you're not being served, just chill and someone will get to you. I assure you the second you get a brew, find your spot you'll fit right in. Look for the restrooms at the rear of the bar both upstairs and down stairs and if you value your hearing (because I too played in a band) have some plugs ready because the acoustics can get to those who care.

I have been to the Moose just about every other week from June till now late July and I gotta say it is a very interesting place. I've only been there on Friday and Saturday nights so I cannot speak on behalf of the other days of the week. If your into Industrial, Metal, Punk, or anything like that this is a cool place to go but make sure you check out what the DJ's will be playing that night. Vary rarely they have a some kinda hip hop/skater night and not too many people are in there when I was there during that night. But this past friday was industrial and electro music and the place was packed. There is a small dance floor if your courageous enough to go out and dance to your favorite songs.
Upon arriving dont' let the big scary bouncer dude that scans your idea back you out from entering. I've gone in this place dressed like a total prep to a total metal head haha and have never had a problem with anybody in there. The people drinking there are friendly and come from all different kinds of scenes around the burgh area. Even some cute girls occasional mosey on in there for a drink so thats always a plus. The bar tenders are fast, nice, and courteous, and I have never had a problem with them, and some of them are very cute unfortunately I never got the name of the one that just waited on me last saturday night ^_~ lolz. They have your basic beers on tap and a wide variety of bottles that can keep your taste buds entertained if your are bold enough to try something new.
Make your way upstairs and you can usually find some type of rock/metal/punk band rocking out to a small crowd but hungry crowd. But hey better to play for thirty wolves than a thousand sheep!!! There is also another bar up there and some old school video games that are always entertaining to play and bring back good memories of being a child.
The bathrooms here are a little odd haha. Since I am a guy I can only comment on the guys room and its very small and crammed. Its painted dark green with stickers, and fliers and writing covering the wall. It can be a little intimidating at first but its cool when your pissing and you can read the crazy shit that people have written all over it.
This is a sweet place to drink and every journey I make to the south side I make sure to at least have a beer in here weather the place is crowded or not. I like the atmosphere and the big video board they have which is always playing something cool that goes along with the music blasting. Definitely go into the Moose. I'll keep going back to it so maybe ill see yinz there!

All smiles at the Moose!!
By looking at my profile, you wouldn't think a girl like me could have a good time at a bar like the Moose. Where are her tattoos? Where are all her peircings? She goes to clubs??
At a place like the Moose, all that doesn't really matter...Scooby will still greet you with open arms just like the Biker-guy next to you (other people there, on the other hand, may be confused! haha)
Surprisingly enough, I actually enjoy a change of pace sometimes and love me a good monster flick or an episode of family guy to watch while drinking. Even on the weekdays, the Moose has a good crowd so make sure you check it out!!

This place is a nice diversion from the rest of the meat n potatoes frat boy/yuppie bars that have grown like cancer in the south side flats recently ... a dedicated hard rock/punk/grunge theme aesthetically and musically with bands of those genres gigging often ... reasonably priced drinks and usually nice and strong too ... BRING YOUR EARPLUGS - VERY loud here ... deafeningly so usually ... a lot of regulars who haunt the place and sometimes a bit too clique-y as far as i'm concerned but as they say in PGH "You'll have that " ... especially with the 21-25 year old crowd ... (picture a lot of Art Institute and Culinary students congregating here frequently)
The upstairs bar is nice for getting out of the first floor mayhem when a band is playing or to shoot pool or to just try and have a conversation with someone without being bumped into constantly ...more tattoos and body piercing here than any other bar I know of in PGH .

The Moose's prices are pretty decent Id say! The bartendars are all nice that Ive encountered. Its a lot of fun to see bands there cause you can stand by the stage and have your own little concert going on! And if youre not in the mood for a show, the upstairs bar is a great place to hang out. sometimes there is karaoke or some freaky show playing on the tele. or even a dj. Everyone is there to have a good time and get a lil wild. Of course Ill go back!
